My Screenplays: I believe writing potential is hidden in our genes. I turn images I see, as well as the pictures from my dream into lines. This is the most crucial parts, stories should be logical, full of conflicts. Characters need to be remembered, either they are extremely good or villains are bad from head to toe.
Experiences: I entered film industry when I started to work for Sino-Scope Film in London, where I worked on script translation, location interpreting, voice dubbing and drafting daily and weekly shooting schedule. This job allowed me creating an idea of writing my own scripts since I believed the Chinese scripts I translated were deadening. As an audience, I definitely wouldn't waste my time and money watching films which were wishy-washy. The cliché awakened my creative genes. I published my first novel, Uncle G’s Love Story in Hong Kong a few years later.
How Did I Started? My first short script, Five Sheep VS Two Human Lives was created while reminiscing about my childhood. I used Fade In, which has a free trail of 10 pages short screenplay. Amazingly, it was selected by Berlin Flash Film Festival. I want to thank Fade In, as well as the writing courses by YouTube.
Three years of lockdown during the Pandemic was my most productive period. During the years, brainstorming and writing were what I did every day. Several feature screenplays were completed during this time.
Writing Skills: Most of my scriptwriting starts with short stories after which, I find more elements to expand them into features. For example: White Is Not A Color was redrafted to Assimilation, Some Other Dignity was expanded to A Red Madrasa School Under Mao, and I Am Not Picky became Three Generations of Women Under Half The Sky.
What To Write: Personal experience is important, for example, as an international student, many stories about Chinese students studying overseas were created which led a feature screenplay Waterdrops Insoluble. Also, Childhood memories, work experiences, stories from friends, biographies are all sources for my writings.
I lived through Cultural Revolution in China. Everything happened during that time can be turned into screenplay. A Red Madrasa School Under Mao, Homeless Dogs Never Bite, Three Generations Of Women Under Half The Sky and An Acetylene Light record what happened to Chinese people during Cultural Revolution.
Screenplay On The Way: My current writing of Disobedient Citizens covers women from China, DPRK and Iran who seek for freedom in the Western nations.
